Back 4 Blood: How to Fix “anti-cheat violation” Bug

There is a bug in Back 4 Blood that causes players to be unable to search for games or create them while showing following error-message:

Online games are unavailable because your game has an anti-cheat violation.

After a few hours of search I found a fix to it and would like to share this information to all of those that face the same problem in Back 4 Blood!

Introduction To The Problem

A few players already came around the following error message when trying to start a game in Back 4 Blood:

Online games are unavailable because your game has an anti-cheat violation.

Although they never used any cheats in the game!
Below a solution and a problem that can lead to that error are shown in high hopes it might help someone out.

Fixing The Problem

THIS IS JUST ONE WAY TO FIX IT THAT SEEMS TO HAVE HELPED MOST PEOPLE THAT ARE RECEIVING THIS ERROR-MESSAGE, IF IT DOESN’T WORK FOR YOU THERE MIGHT BE OTHER SOLUTIONS OUT THERE OR THERE IS AN ACTUAL BAN FROM THE GAME ON YOUR ACCOUNT!

THIS FIX WAS DONE ON WINDOWS 10!

The main problem:

Apparently Back 4 Blood can’t handle it if your computer’s main folders are changed, especially talking about the “Documents” folder when opening “This PC”. This can happen out of a few reasons, maybe you deleted it, or you changed its direction on purpose or some program changed that as the installation of for example “OneDrive” can do (as far as I’ve read).

To fix this issue proceed as follows:

Fixing the folders location:

Usually the following should work, no matter if you deleted your folder(s) or the direction is changed.

Simply restart your computer after the change was done and then enter “This PC” again. You will see that there are again shortcuts to those folders, when trying to open these a) an error message appears (deleted) or b) you are opening a folder in the wrong direction (proper direction: C:\Users\[your_username]). What you now should do is make a right click on the documents shortcut, then press properties, then path and at the bottom left you should see the option “Restore Default“. This should restore your default folder at the correct pathing and should therefor fix the issue.

For me only the documents folder was the problem. If it doesn’t work for you try to restore all the other folders as well and don’t forget to double check the pathing and eventually restart your game and/or your computer.

I hope this small guide helped someone out there out!

If the above option did not help you fix the problem, here are some related links that helped me find out about the solution, so maybe you want to give other mentioned solutions a try:

On this page you can find a bug report on the official Back 4 Blood pageMaybe even think about signing in there and adress the issue as well so there might eventually a fix soon for players that face the same problem but can’t find the/a solution. Additionally the comment section might lead you to other solutions:

If none of this could help you with your issue you should eventually make sure if you did not receive a true ban (but I think you should get a notification on steam if so) – if that’s not the case or the ban was unjustified then you should try to contact the developers!
