Psychonauts 2: How to Use a DualShock 4 (DS4) Controller

This guide shows you how to play Psychonauts 2 with a DS4 and PlayStation button prompts.

NOTE

Unfortunately vibration does not seem to work. If you got it to work, please share it here and I will update the guide.

Introduction

The built-in DS4 support that comes with Steam can be used to play Psychonauts 2, but it will make the game show Xbox button prompts instead of PlayStation button prompts. However, the game actually has built-in support for DS4 button prompts. Follow this guide to be able to play Psychonauts 2 with DS4 and PlayStation button prompts.

Download DS4Windows

Download the latest release of DS4Windows[github.com]. Extract the archive and put the DS4Windows folder somewhere that you prefer. As of the time of this writing, the latest version is 3.0.18, which includes the “Re-enabled DS4 emulation support” update. If you already have an older version, update it.

Connect your DS4

Turn on your DS4 and connect it to your PC. If you have never done it before, pair your DS4 with your PC via Bluetooth by holding the PS + Share buttons on the DS4 until the light flickers, and add the device in the Bluetooth settings on Windows. You can also use a USB cable to connect.

You can follow this guide[www.playstation.com] or this video for more details.

Configure your DS4 profile

  • Open DS4Windows and wait until your DS4 shows up.
  • Create a new profile.
  • When prompted, select “Yes” to use a preset option.
  • Leave the preset on “Gamepad” and change the “Output Controller” to “DualShock 4”
  • Name the profile “Psychonauts 2” (or anything you want) in the top left input box.
  • Click on the Touchpad tab, and change the “Output Mode” to “Passthru”
  • Save the profile.
  • Make sure that the Psychonauts 2 profile is selected.
  • Minimize DS4Windows and leave it running.
Note: this will disable navigation of Steam’s Big Picture mode using the controller.

It is an unfortunate tradeoff, but I think it’s worth it compared to playing the game with Xbox button prompts.

Turn off the built-in DS4 support on Steam

Make sure you turn off the built-in DS4 controller support on Steam. If you’ve already turned it off globally, skip this section. Otherwise, follow the following instructions to turn it off for Psychonauts 2.

  • Right click on Psychonauts 2 in your Steam Library and click “Properties”.
  • Click the “Controller” tab.
  • Select the option “Disable Steam Input”.
  • Close the window.

Play the game!

That should be it! Launch the game and try to use the controllers. It should pick up the input right away and show the correct PlayStation button prompts.

During gameplay, pressing the touchpad will bring up Raz’s in-game manual. I’ve read some people have issues accessing the manual using the DS4 (I’ve experienced that too), but everything seems to work correctly using this setup.

Thanks to laymonage for his great guide, all credit to his effort. you can also read the original guide from Steam Community. enjoy the game.
